Do Faith And Business Mix?

Do Faith & Business Mix-Hi, my name is Richard and I’m a follower of Jesus and a 3rd generation entrepreneur.

Faith and business have always been a HUGE part of my life.

I love business. I love marketing.

Beyond a shadow of a doubt, business and entrepreneurship are my calling in life.

I eat. I sleep. I breathe… business.

But here’s the thing…

I love Jesus.

I love the Church.

Beyond a shadow of a doubt, He’s given me life.

I eat. I sleep. I breathe… Jesus and His way of living life and treating others.

But here’s the thing…

For the longest time I had a conflict between my faith and business.

At least within the realm of being a member of a church community.

I’m not really sure why that is?

I know Jesus doesn’t have a problem with my business or business in general.

After all, I’m a Strategic Intervention Life & Business Coach.

I help my clients create a life and business they love while making a big difference in the world. It’s my passion to see people SUCCEED beyond their wildest dreams and be able to do more of God’s work while doing it.

In case you didn’t know, ministry takes MONEY.

I’ve known this since I was 18. At the time I wanted to travel and speak as a minister but didn’t want to be a burden to churches. So I started my first business, an urban clothing store.

While it ended up not being the successful business venture I had wanted, it was a crash course in business and I learned a lot of valuable lessons.

My goal for the business was to make money to support whatever ministry I wanted to do.

After I closed the business, I worked a few odd jobs and then took a job as a Crusade Director for an international ministry.

I worked for the ministry full-time for 3 years, but still felt the call to build my own successful business.

Long story short, after I left my ministry position I went and worked in my family business for a few years until going out on my own as a marketing consultant and building a successful business.

It definitely wasn’t easy and quite honestly my extended family and church friends were the least supportive people in my business endeavors.

I felt like an outcast in my family and my church family.

Welcome to the life of an entrepreneur!!

I experienced a constant struggle between building a successful business and being a part of the church community.

It’s like my faith and business just didn’t seem to want to play nice with each other?

But then I realized it wasn’t just me.

I realized there were many other business people and entrepreneurs that felt the same way.

It seems like the Church doesn’t really know what to do with us?

I’m not here to point fingers at pastors and blame lay-people.

I know there’s pastors that appreciate business people.

But being truthfully honest, I feel like I’ve grown more as a father, husband, and business owner OUTSIDE of the church than within it.

All the churches that I’ve personally experienced cater more towards the ministry-minded types. Those that want to be worship leaders, missionaries, or even pastors.

Heck, some churches have built HUGE businesses around ‘schools of ministry’ for these types of people.

Not a criticism, just my observation.

It just seems like entrepreneurs and business owners are an afterthought to most churches.

So what’s my point of this post?

Really, I just want to start a conversation.

Do you feel like your faith and business mix and can coexist? Do you feel as an entrepreneur that you have a community to help you grow personally and professionally?

I’d love to read your thoughts in the comments below.

-Richard
